Persecución
Content: 1 CD
Year of publication: 1980

In this recording El Lebrijano lends his voice to the texts written by Félix Grande, with guitar accompaniment by Pedro Peña and Enrique Marchena. El Lebrijano was already carrying out musical research. In this record, he introduces the "cante por galeras" (prison ship singing).

Very Traditional and Authentic Spanish Gypsy Music
This CD is very traditional pure cantoar singing with burelias, tangos, caravan, taranta, romance, siguiriya etc.The voice is marvellous and the chorus sounds very nice. This music is not for the uninitiated listner as it requires a lot of careful understanding of what the Gypsies went through during the suffering period. The sound is exceptional the best I have heard with the sound of a horse so visible to the mind (intro)There's also a narration preceding each song.Graet music froma great Cantoar.Muchas gracias Monsieur El Lebrijano.

A cry for freedom
I came across this record looking for some authentic, classic flamenco singing with a social and rebellious edge. I got more than I bargained for: first-rate singing and guitar playing, as well as moving narration and choruses (I don't usually like chorus singing, but in this case it is not overbearing and fits in nicely) which tell the story of the persecution suffered by gypsies under different Spanish kings, including songs about the prison ships in which gypsies who refused to change their ways and to forsake their gypsyness were confined. A deep yearning for freedom underlies the whole album, which I strongly recommend.
