5th Suma Flamenco Festival held in memory of Enrique Morente

The festival will take place from 9 June to 2 July in different venues in the Spanish capital and another 4 surrounding towns

Enrique Morente has been, from its founding, a fundamental pillar of Festival Suma Flamenca. But tragically, this year he will be missing. And not due to rain, the absence of the master from Granada will be felt at the Madrid festival, which this year is dedicated to his memory.

The bill of the 15th Madrid Region Flamenco Festival this year includes over 20 performances and is held at 8 venues in the capital and another 4 in different towns of the region (Buitrago del Lozoya, La Cabrera, Rivas Vaciamadrid and San Lorenzo de El Escorial).

>From 9 June to 2 July flamenco fans will be able to enjoy the best cante, dance and guitar with performances by true flamenco greats.

The opening of ‘Suma Flamenca’ will be at the Teatros del Canal de la Comunidad de Madrid (Sala Roja), with performances by Estrella Morente. After her reappearance at the Palau de la Música in Barcelona (after the death of her father, the maestro, Enrique Morente), on the 9 June at 20:30, she will be performing in Madrid in a concert called ‘Morente en concierto’.

This same venue will also host another 5 performances for the festival. Another two young masters, Valderrama and Arcángel will perform a magnificent duet, and Diego El Cigala will give one of the most curious performances of this year’s festival. Niño Josele will enchant us with his guitar, while Rocio Molina will perform her new dance show ‘Danzaora’, and the dance duet Belén Maya and Olga Pericet will perform ‘Bailes alegres para personas
tristes’.
Flamenco en la frontera
New for this year is the approximation of flamenco to sister music styles in the section called ‘Flamenco en la frontera’.

As part of this section of the festival, the Hungarian embassy to Spain brings the incredible voice of Márta Sebestyén, held in conjuncture with the Hungarian presidency of the EU. She will share the stage with Niño Josele, at the Teatros del Canal de la
Comunidad de Madrid. On the same stage, from Romania, the gipsy band Fandarria Shavale will offer a fin de fiesta in concert with Diego El Cigala.

Other concerts of this cycle include the Israeli music star, Idan Raichel, playing alongisde Diego
Guerrero and his Solar de Artistas, at the Teatro de La Abadía. The final performance of this cycle with Renaud García-Fons, French bassist and winner of the Giraldillo de Oro 2010 for Best Musical Performance at the Seville Flamenco Biennial. This will be held at the Real Coliseo de Carlos III in San Lorenzo de El Escorial.
‘Off, en Vallecas’
The second of the ‘Off Vallecas’ cycles brings together Madrid’s principal young flamenco talents at the Cultural Paco Rabal-Palomeras Bajas. This cycle boasts a good sample of schools and trends of current flamenco.

Opening performances will be by Caño Roto from Vallecas, with the master guitar player El Entri and the dancer Niño de los Reyes, winner of the Suma Flamenco award.

The second day see a large host of young flamenco talent from Madrid, with Gabriel de la Tomasa, Miguel de la Toleá, SaúlQuiros, Carlos de Jacoba, Jony Jiménez, Lucky Losada, Morito, Auxi Fernández, Guirula ‘El Cancu’, José Ramón Jiménez and Kelian Jiménez.
